Video Digitization Drop-off Services

If you are a Feinberg School of Medicine faculty member, the Galter Library can digitize your video content from VHS tapes and DVDs, providing digital video in a number of formats.

Note: The Galter Library will only digitize video that is to be used within the Feinberg School of Medicine curriculum.  Video content must be in compliance with copyright law.

Available Formats

  • Streaming Media:  We will upload your video to the NU streaming server and provide you with a link. Your streaming video can then be played using RealPlayer (available for free on all major platforms), and accessed by anyone with a valid NU NetID.  This is preferable for video that will be used within a course and remotely accessed by students, and is required if streaming copyrighted material.
  • Computer-playable file:   We can convert your video into a common file format (.mov, .avi or .mpg) that can be played on any computer and embedded into PowerPoint presentations.  This is preferable for video that will be used as a part of a presentation, or for a backup that can be easily played on your computer desktop.
  • Northwestern MediaSpace file:   For anyone familiar with MediaSpace, we can convert your video into a MediaSpace-compatible format, which you can then upload to your account.  This service will only be offered for "public" content that is either public domain or for which you own or have obtained the copyright.
  • DVD:   We can convert VHS content into a simple DVD that will play in most stand-alone and software-based DVD players.  This is preferable for video that will be presented on a large screen and needs to be in a high-quality format, or video that will be handed off to someone who might not have online access.  This can also act as a digital archive of an analog (VHS) source.
