Guides & Tutorials: Integrated Graduate Program (IGP) Resource Guide

This resource guide is intended for students in the Integrated Graduate Program. While not an exhaustive list of available resources, it should serve as a springboard for research and self-directed learning. We have included links to guides and interactive tutorials for a number of resources, enabling you to learn how to use these resources independently. Click the link to find additional information on specific resources.

For resources specific to Molecular Biology you may wish to consult the Molecular Biology and Genetics Resource Guide.

Databases at Galter

Access many of the databases listed below and more by going to the Galter Library home page and clicking the Databases link. Also, many of these databases can be found in the "QuickLinks" near the top of the Galter Library home page.

Catalog (NUcat)
NUcat is the online catalog of all the Northwestern University Libraries as well as affiliated hospital libraries. Use NUcat to find out if NU libraries own a particular book, journal, or multimedia item.

MEDLINE

  PubMed
PubMed, a service of the National Library of Medicine, includes over 15 million citations for biomedical articles back to the 1950's. These citations are from MEDLINE and additional life science journals.

  Tutorial
  Ovid
The Ovid MEDLINE database contains bibliographic citations and author abstracts from more than 4,600 biomedical journals published in the United States and in 70 other countries.

Guide
Beilstein and Gmelin
Two distinct but related databases. Beilstein indexes three primary data domains in organic chemistry: substances, reactions, and literature. Gmelin is a comprehensive data collection in organometallic and inorganic chemistry. It is searchable by structures, substructures, and reactions. You will need to install client software on your computer to access Beilstein and Gmelin.

Guide
BIOSIS
Biosis provides access to the Biological Abstracts database, containing citations and abstracts to literature in more than 5,000 international journals.

Chemical Information
The ChemIDplus database provides chemical information on drugs, pesticides, environmental pollutants, and other potential toxins. Search by keyword or chemical structure.

EMBASE Drugs & Pharmacology
Containing more than 1,560,000 abstracts and citations, EMBASE: Drugs & Pharmacology provides comprehensive coverage of drug and pharmacology literature.

NCBI's Entrez Life Science Database
Cross-database search engine from the National Center for Biotechnology Information at the NIH. Searches databases for proteins, nucleotides, genes, SNPs and provides many tools for gene and molecular visualization.

NCBI Info

OMIM-Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man
OMIM is a database of human genes and genetic disorders. Entries for each gene include links to PubMed citations and links to sequence records in other NCBI resources.

SciFinder Scholar
SciFinder Scholar contains citations with abstracts from the Chemical Abstracts database covering the literature in chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, materials science and related subjects. Users may search by chemical substance or reactions, by research topic, by author, or by Chemical Abstracts or patent number. You will need to install client software on your computer to access SciFinder Scholar.

Guide Tutorial
TOXNET (Toxicology Data Network)
TOXNET is a set of databases on toxicology, hazardous chemicals, and related areas. Users can search multiple databases or one database at a time.

Web of Science-Web of Knowledge
Web of Science-Web of Knowlege is a suite of citation databases including Science Citation Index Expanded, Social Sciences Citation Index, and Arts & Humanities Citation Index.

Community of Science (COS)
COS is a suite of resources and databases that provides tools and services enabling research professionals to communicate, exchange information and find the people and technologies that are important to their work.

CRISP - Computer Retrieval of Information on Scientific Projects
Crisp is a database of federally funded biomedical research projects conducted at universities, hospitals, and other research institutions.

EndNote Guide
EndNote is bibliographic management software which allows you to create libraries of references. After you have created a library you can quickly and easily insert references into your papers and automatically create bibliographies. Current NU students, faculty, and staff can download EndNote from the E-Academy site. See our EndNote support page for more details.

Faculty of 1000
