Welcome alumni of the Feinberg School of Medicine! We are pleased to offer you access to many of our library services.** Use us to stay informed, organized, and connected. Get research assistance, order articles, take a class, or create your own customizable library Web page. Check out our selection of freely-available journal, book, and database collections below. And remember, we're just a phone call or mouse-click away.
Registration is necessary to access many of the special features of the Galter Health SmartLibrary. Read on to get started.
** Only alumni of the Feinberg School of Medicine (FSM) and the Dental and Nursing Schools at Northwestern University are eligible to register for library services at the Galter Health Sciences Library. All other alumni should contact the library of the school from which they graduated to find out about services offered to alumni of other schools at Northwestern University. |

Get started
- Get a library barcode from the Galter Health Sciences Library: either complete the Application to Use Library Services for Alumni of Northwestern University or stop by the Galter Library in person.
- Use the barcode to register for a Health SmartLibrary account.
Stay informed!
- Photocopy Service* — Order copies of articles from the library for $7 per article.
- Literature Searches* — Request expert searchers to perform literature searches for as little as $20 per search.
- Borrow Materials — Alumni with current addresses in the 312, 773, 224, 630, 708 and 847 area codes may borrow books for free from the Galter Library.
- Classes* — Take free classes on many topics, such as EndNote and PubMed. See the class schedule for details.
- Ask a Librarian — Request answers to short, factual questions from Galter librarians. More in-depth research is available for a fee through our literature search service.
Stay organized!
- Customized Library Web page* — Create a Health SmartLibrary account and customize your library Web page so that your favorite resources are displayed. Alumni do not have remote access to licensed electronic resources at the present time.

- Special Collections Research — Alumni with questions relating to the use of the Library's rare books and archival materials can contact the Reference Desk by email or by calling (312) 503-8109. Some research services are fee-based.
- Supporting the Galter Library — Many of our alumni have given generously to support future collections and services.

- BioMed Central — an independent publishing house committed to providing immediate free access to peer-reviewed biomedical research.
- DOAJ (Directory of Open Access Journals)—this service covers free, full text, quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals.
- Free Medical Journals — is dedicated to the promotion of free access to medical journals over the Internet.
- Highwire Press — more than 1.3 million free, full-text articles online.
- Public Library of Science — a nonprofit scientific publishing venture that will provide high-quality, high-profile journal articles.
- PubMed Central— a digital archive of life sciences journal literature managed by the U.S. National Center for Biotechnology Information at the National Library of Medicine.
- AccessMedicine* — includes Harrison's, Hurst's The Heart, Schwartz Surgery and more
- STAT!Ref* — includes DeGowin's Diagnostic Examination, Rudolph's Pediatrics, Review of General Psychiatry and many more
- Merck Manuals — free online texts about diagnosis and therapy, health and aging, geriatrics, home medicine, chemical and drugs, and veterinary care. Texts are available in English as well as other languages.
- National Academies Press — includes Institute of Medicine reports.
- Freebooks4Doctors — links to more than 500 full-text medical books online.
- NCBI Bookshelf — a growing collection of online, searchable biomedical textbooks.
- PDA Resource Guide — collection of PDA resources, many of which are free. Contains drug guides, books, guidelines, calculators and other tools for your PDA.

- PubMed — free access to MEDLINE, the premier biomedical literature database.
- AgeLine — aging-related research from psychology, sociology, social work, economics, public policy, and the health sciences.
- MedlinePlus — authoritative information from NLM, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and other government agencies and health-related organizations. It also includes extensive information about drugs, an illustrated medical encyclopedia, interactive patient tutorials, and latest health news.
- CancerNet — Gateway to peer-reviewed information by cancer type. Includes links to PDQ (Physician Data Query), SEER (Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results) and other specialized information resources.
- NLM Gateway — allows users of NLM services to initiate searches from one Web interface, providing "one-stop searching" for many of NLM's information resources or databases. Resources include MEDLINE, TOXLINE, ClinicalTrials.gov, and MedlinePlus.
- National Guideline Clearinghouse — a public resource for evidence-based clinical practice guidelines.
