Getting into Information Shape: Spring Training at Galter LibraryStephanie Kerns, MLS, Head, Education and Outreach/Curriculum Librarian, skerns@northwestern.eduOn Thursday, March 31 the library held an all-day information fair called Spring Training: Your Information Workout. The one-day fair featured several instructional sessions covering topics of interest to clinicians, researchers, and educators in the health sciences. People who attended the fair were impressed by the range of sessions, particularly the Copyright and Health SmartLibrary offerings.
The day began with refreshments and then a keynote speech given by David Liebovitz, MD, Medical Director, Clinical Information Systems at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. In an update to the topic of medical informatics, he spoke about the electronic medical record and integrating medical information at the point of care. This was followed by a presentation of how to register for and customize the library’s Web site, the Health SmartLibrary. Breakout sessions were divided into three tracks, although attendees were able to choose any session they wanted to take. The sessions included Using the Health SmartLibrary, Copyright: Your Rights and Responsibilities, Beginning Blackboard: Building a Course Site and Adding Content, Advanced Blackboard: Using Advanced Features, Grants and Other Research Funding Resources, and Evidence-Based Medicine. These workshops were taught by Galter librarians and staff from Academic Technologies and the Office of Sponsored Research.
During the lunch session attendees had the opportunity to get help from NUIT staff about NU systems, to get personalized assistance from library staff on the Health SmartLibrary, and to learn about the educational software available at the library and through our Web site. Adding further to the day's excitement, one lucky participant won a flash drive! The workshops presented during Spring Training will be incorporated into the schedule of library classes. If you are interested in taking one or more of them, check our schedule at http://www.galter.northwestern.edu/courses/ or email the Education Department to request a class at galter-ed@northwestern.edu. |
