New Carpet Coming This Summer

James Shedlock, AMLS, AHIP, Director, j-shedlock@northwestern.edu

As users know, the Galter Library has a carpet problem on the second floor. The carpet is separating from its padding and as a result, there are now substantial ‘traffic bumps’ that pose a safety hazard for users, staff and visitors. Though the carpet is not old, the problems cannot be easily fixed. Consequently, the university is installing new carpet tiles this summer.

Work is anticipated to begin during the month of August. The entire second floor will be closed. This means no access to the stacks, Dollie’s Corner leisure reading collection or the group study rooms and carrels. Users needing current books from the second floor can have them paged by library staff. Please present the title of the book and its call number to the circulation desk staff. Work should be completed in time for the new student orientation by late August. Updates on the progress of the carpet replacement will be placed on the library's Web site under Library News.

Users can see a sample of the new carpet colors (dark red ‘beet’ and ‘maple’ brown) and style in front of study rooms 2-282 and 2-284.

If you have any questions about this project, please contact James Shedlock at 3-8133 or j-shedlock@northwestern.edu.

Collection Moves at Galter

Kurt Munson, MSLIS, Head, User Services, kmunson@northwestern.edu

The library’s Audio Visual collection is moving. The AV reserve collection relocated to the circulation desk. The models will be moving from the LRC to the reference room and to the circulation desk soon. Next, the AV collection will be relocated from the backroom of the LRC to shelves so that users can browse that collection. These materials are available for a one week checkout period.

The Audio Visual equipment for checkout has also moved. It is now located at the circulation desk. We have also changed the loan period for AV equipment from two hours to four hours. These changes are being made to improve access to these materials.

Please contact Kurt Munson at 503-6898 or kmunson@northwestern.edu if you have any questions or comments about these changes.
