New and Updated Resources Roundup
This article was featured in Library Notes, #45 (Fall 2007).
In the last few months, the Galter Health Sciences Library has acquired several new resources and is also offering some familiar resources on new platforms. The library usually presents its annual list of new subscriptions in the Winter 2008 issue of Library Notes. In the meantime, here is a roundup of some of the more recently acquired and updated resources:
CINAHL and SPORTDiscus now available on EBSCO platform
Both CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature) and SPORTDiscus, the exercise, rehabilitation, and sports medicine literature database, are now available via the EBSCO search platform. While both databases are still searchable through Ovid, access using Ovid will no longer be available as of November 2007.
Cochrane and DARE now on Wiley
The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR) can now be accessed as part of the Cochrane Library from Wiley. Also included in the Cochrane Library is the Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effectiveness (DARE) and the Cochrane Controlled Trials Register. Up until now, these databases were only available through Ovid as part of the EBM Reviews, which also included ACP Journal Club (access to the Ovid versions of these databases will cease in November 2007). The Cochrane Library's simple search interface allows quick and effective access to these important evidence-based medicine review products. PDFs of the Cochrane reviews are also now available in the Wiley platform. A separate subscription to ACP Journal Club will be available on the American College of Physicians platform in 2008.
InfoPOEMs: Critical Appraisals of the Clinical Literature
The library now provides access to InfoPOEMS, a database containing critical appraisals of the clinical literature most likely to impact practice. A more detailed overview of InfoPOEMs is available in the Spring/Summer 2007 issue of Library Notes.
Clinical Evidence Moved from Ovid to BMJ Publishing
This important resource is no longer available through Ovid, but can be accessed on the BMJ Publishing site. Clinical Evidence is an evidence-based disease management resource. It summarizes the current state of knowledge about the prevention and treatment of clinical conditions, based on thorough searches and appraisal of the literature.
Sage Deep Backfile
Beginning in mid-July 2007, Northwestern University libraries’ users may have noticed that older years (often from vol. 1 through 1998) of 300+ Sage journal titles became electronically available. This is a result of a collaborative purchase by the NU libraries to make available the Sage Deep Backfile suite. The libraries’ online catalog (NUcat) contains records for each Sage title, and each library’s website lists coverage information and links to this newly available online content. Some Sage titles in the Deep Backfile that may be of possible interest to Galter Library users include:
- Diabetes educator
- Journal of clinical pharmacology
- Journal of early adolescence
- Journal of psychopharmacology
- Neuroscientist
Unbound Central is now UCentral
The Unbound Central suite of handheld products has been renamed and is now called UCentral. This collection includes Current Consult Medicine, Davis's Drug Guide, Pocket Guide to Diagnostic Tests, and Unbound Surgery. Access it from the E-Resources menu under PDA.
- A Clinical guide to pediatric infectious disease
- Pediatric pathology
- Practice of pediatric orthopedics
- Diabetes mellitus: a fundamental and clinical text
- Parkinson's disease and movement disorders
- Cardiopulmonary imaging
- Dubois' lupus erythematosus
- Fundamentals of diagnostic radiology
- Grabb & Smith's plastic surgery
- Resolving ethical dilemmas: a guide for clinicians
- Walsh & Hoyt's clinical neuro-ophthalmology
All of these resources can be found in the E-Resources section of the library website. Updates of new e-resources are posted to the Galter Library news blog on a weekly basis. Please contact the Reference Desk at 312-503-8109 if you have any questions about using these or any of our resources.
