Publications

Mark BerendsenMark Berendsen, Education Librarian, has been exceptionally busy. In addition to his September marriage, he co-authored a paper with faculty in the Department of Preventive Medicine. The subject of the paper is behavioral interventions to promote smoking cessation and prevent weight gain and it is published in the September 2009 issue of Addiction.

Ron SimsRon Sims, Special Collections Librarian, co-authored a paper on the history of measles in Hawaii with Dr. Stanford Shulman and Deborah Shulman from the Department of Pediatrics at Feinberg School of Medicine. The article was published in the August 2009 issue of Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal.

Appointments and Committees

Ramune KubiliusRamune Kubilius, Collection Development / Special Projects Librarian has begun a term as a member of the Awards committee of the Special Libraries Association's (SLA's) Biomedical and Life Sciences Division (DBIO). The committee will recommend DBIO members for SLA level awards and recommend candidates for DBIO awards. The SLA is a nonprofit global organization for information professionals and their strategic partners, with about 11,000 members in 75 countries. In conjunction with SLA's Centennial, the DBIO conducted a poll to identify the 100 most influential journals of Biology & Medicine over the last 100 years and awards were given to publishers of those journals at the SLA Centennial conference in Washington, D.C. in June 2009.

Meetings and Conferences

Jim ShedlockJim Shedlock, Director attended the 2009 National Library of Medicine/Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries Leadership Fellowship Capstone program, Oct. 19-21, 2009 in Washington, DC.  This program completed Jim's year-long role as mentor to Nancy Tannery, Associate Director for User Services, University of Pittsburgh Health Sciences Library System.  Program content included visits to NLM to learn about future operations, grant funding and new services; discussions about publishing ethics and legislative issues; and overall program evaluation.

Jim BruckerJeremy PrevostSteve HuntJim Brucker, Instructional Design Librarian, Jeremy Prevost, Technical Consultant, and Steve Hunt, Web Librarian attended the CFUnited ColdFusion Developers Conference in Virginia in August . ColdFusion is a programming language used by the library's programmers to create dynamic web pages.

Susan WishnetskySusan Wishnetsky, Electronic Resources Librarian, Tony Olson, Cataloging Librarian, and Michelle Frisque, Head, User Services attended the American Library Association conference in Chicago in July.

 

Tony OlsonTony Olson attended the Ex Libris Users of North America (ELUNA) conference in Richmond, VA in May and the ELUNA Great Lakes Users Group conference at University of Notre Dame, South Bend, IN in October. Ex Libris is the vendor for a number of library-related products that facilitate access to the library's resources including the online catalog and the Find it@NU functionality.

Michelle FrisqueMichelle Frisque is the current president of Library and Information Technology (LITA), a division of the American Library Association. In May, Michelle attended LITACamp in Dublin, OH which is described as "a library technology un-conference for anyone interested in libraries using all types and implementations of technology to continually improve services and access for patrons." In November, she attended the LITA National Forum in Salt Lake City, NV.

Back to School

Heidi Nickisch DugganBoth Heidi Nickisch Duggan, Associate Director, and Michelle Frisque are heading back to school. Heidi was accepted into the Master of Science in Communication program at Northwestern University and began her studies in October. The program comprehensively blends management and communication skills while enabling working professionals to continue their careers. Michelle was accepted into the Master of Science in Learning & Organizational Change (MSLOC) program at Northwestern University. The MSLOC program is designed to prepare leaders and professionals who want to experience a new way of thinking about organizational issues to more successfully drive transformational and strategic change. She began her studies in the Fall 2009 quarter.

Former Education Department Assistant Philister Sidigu was accepted into the Masters in Fine Arts in Writing for the Screen and Stage program at Northwestern. She will be attending classes full-time while continuing to work part-time as a Reference Assistant at the University Library in Evanston.
