The Galter Health Sciences Library has arranged to purchase the online backfiles of JAMA and the specialty journals published by the American Medical Association (AMA), the largest association of  physicians and medical students in the United States. The online backfiles will make it possible for library users to access online full-text for every issue of JAMA & Archives journals published from 1883 through 1997 and will include many landmark articles. The journal content for those early years had not been available in digital format until now. Content since 1998 is available through the Galter Library's current JAMA & Archives subscriptions.



Backfile content began going live October 1, 2008, starting with Archives of internal medicine. Below is a list of the publications and years of coverage that will be included in the digitized JAMA & Archives backfiles when the AMA completes the project later in 2009:

Although the AMA was founded in 1847, these journals did begin publication during the association's formative years.

It may be interesting to note that one of the founding members of the AMA and a former editor of JAMA was Nathan Smith Davis, a President of the Faculty and later Dean of Northwestern University's medical school. His papers are housed in the Galter Library's Special Collections.
