Below is a list of journal titles and other resources that the Galter Library is canceling for FY11.  The bulk of the cancellations are journal titles with subscriptions that will end on December 31, 2010.  Some of the other canceled resources will end this fall as their licenses come due for renewal.

As the Feinberg School of Medicine community is aware, the medical school is facing a tough financial year in FY11.  The Galter Library is not exempt and needs to work with a smaller budget than in years past.  For FY11, all medical school department budgets were reduced by 5%.  Compounding these cuts is a publisher inflation factor of approximately 8-10%.  This means that the library needed an increase of nearly $200,000 in FY11 just to stay even with the collections purchased in FY10.  Fortunately, we have staff members who are expert at negotiating and looking for additional savings from vendors and publishers in order to get the best value for our limited purchasing power.  To balance our budget and live within our means, we must trim the library’s acquisitions budget by at least $230,000 for FY11. With some of the money saved with these cuts, we also hope to add a number of new key resources.

Galter staff members analyzed as much usage data as we could get from various publishers to determine how much our resources are being used.  Low usage is the most objective criterion we have in making decisions about cutting the collections.  Other criteria include cost per use of a canceled title versus cost to borrow an article from the same journal; unreasonable price increases from one year to the next; and whether the subscription is received in both print and electronic formats (i.e., the print will be canceled).  We excluded journal titles or other resources that were acquired in 2010, giving these titles another year of potential use to see how popular or valued they are.  Articles from canceled titles will be available through the library’s interlibrary loan service and users should consult with library staff about alternatives to the canceled databases. More cuts may be made as new information is received.

After so many years of building up our collections, it is not easy to have to cancel titles.  However, we hope you recognize that we need to make some difficult decisions to be able to balance our budget.  If you care to comment on the reductions to the Galter Library collections, you can visit me, call me at 312-503-8133 or send me an email message.  Let’s hope for better times ahead for the medical school and medical center.
