Northwestern University Libraries has begun a master plan study to create an architectural program that aligns the uses and designs of library facilities with new services and strategies. What will the library system look like 20 years from now? What type of digital resources might be planned for the incoming class of 2030, how will our distinctive special collections be housed, and what must our buildings do to support both the diverse resources and the researchers using them? Authorized by the Office of the Provost and in conjunction with Facilities Management, this comprehensive study will consider space needs of the Northwestern University Library, Galter Health Sciences Library, and the Pritzker Legal Research Center, and propose a long-range plan to suggest approaches to meeting those needs. The architectural firm RMJM Hillier has been selected to conduct the master plan study and will be working with University faculty, students, and staff over the next six months to examine existing spaces and look at new ways to utilize these spaces to continue to provide essential services and perhaps new services desired by the campus community.
In the coming months, RMJM Hillier will be conducting web-based surveys of faculty and students; in fact, surveys have been sent to Feinberg students in the past week, and faculty and staff will be surveyed in June. Northwestern University Libraries and Facilities Management staff will provide forums for general comments on the planning in summer 2008 and responses to proposals in fall 2008. Questions, comments and feedback may be directed via email to j-shedlolck@northwestern.edu

EMBASE is a biomedical and pharmacological literature database which is often referred to as the European counterpart to MEDLINE. About 1800 of the approximately 4800 journals indexed in EMBASE are not covered in MEDLINE. Recognized strengths of EMBASE include thorough indexing of drug and pharmaceutical literature as well as indexing of journals originating in Europe and the Far East. Galter Health Sciences Library has initiated trials to EMBASE through two different vendors—Ovid and Embase.com.
Please take a few moments to test out each search interface and let us know which one you prefer. Hint: It's often helpful to run a search on the same topic in two different databases to get a feel for how each works. After you have run searches in each database please take our short survey.

These trials will only be active through May, 2008 so please fill out the survey as soon as possible.
Thank you. As always we appreciate your feedback.
The Galter Library's Submission Policy Guide outlines the steps needed to comply with the National Institutes of Health Public Access Policy.
EndNote version X1 is now available to all current faculty, staff, and students with a valid NetID. However, before upgrading you should be aware of the following issues associated with the EndNote X1 upgrade.
Einstein, also known as Metalib, and SFX, also known as Find it @ NU, will be undergoing a hardware upgrade beginning on Monday March 24th through Friday March 28th. These systems will be available sporadically during the scheduled maintenance.
Remote Access via the University Library website will be unavailable on Monday, March 24th between 1-5pm, for software maintenance. Remote access via the Galter Library website will not be affected during this maintenance. The actual downtime should be less than an hour, but please allow for the entire maintenance window to be used.
The Northwestern University Library apologizes for the inconvenience and appreciates your understanding.
March 17, 2008 NIH press release
Excerpt:
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) today announced the establishment of the NIH Intramural Center for Genomics and Health Disparities (NICGHD), a new venue for research about the way populations are impacted by diseases, including obesity, diabetes and hypertension. NICGHD will employ a genomics approach, collecting and analyzing genetic, clinical, lifestyle and socio-economic data to study a range of clinical conditions that have puzzled and troubled public health experts for decades. The trans-NIH center will be directed by internationally renowned genetic epidemiologist Charles N. Rotimi, Ph.D., former director of the National Human Genome Center at Howard University.
