Browse Library Subscribed Journals on your iPad

The trial is now ended. Thanks for participating!

Northwestern University Library is now running a trial of BrowZine, which is a tablet application that allows you to browse, read, and monitor some of the library’s best journals, from your iPad. Journals from Elsevier, Springer, Wiley, Sage, and several other major publishers are currently supported. Items found in BrowZine can easily be synced up with Zotero, Dropbox or several other services to help keep all of your information together in one place.

To learn more, please take a look at this short video:
http://thirdiron.com/browzine-ipad-app/video/

For the trial, search for “BrowZine” in the App Store and download the app for free; when initially launching BrowZine, select Northwestern University from the drop-down list. You will then need to enter your NetID and password to access journal content.

The trial only runs for a few weeks so please submit your feedback to this blog post.

ScienceDirect PDF Problems

In the meantime, try one of these workarounds to view PDFs from ScienceDirect journals.

1. In Internet Explorer, right click on the PDF icon and use "Save Target As" or "Save File As" to download the PDF to your computer. Then open the file as you would any other file on your computer.

EMBASE Access Ends September 30

Due to lower than expected use and rising licensing costs, Galter Library has decided not to renew access to EMBASE for FY2012. Access to EMBASE will end on Friday, September 30. The savings from this cancellation will be applied to price increases for current journal and book titles, and possibly additional titles with the potential for more widespread use. Stay tuned for upcoming announcements of new book and journal titles.

GalterSearch Beta is Evolving

Since launching the redesigned Galter Library website and our new search engine, GalterSearch Beta, we have received a generous amount of feedback. Based on your comments we've made several changes to how the new search system works.

You told us you were getting too many results, so we've scaled back the default search to retrieve only items in the library catalog. While this change should make it easier to quickly locate journals, books, and other items owned or licensed by Northwestern University libraries, you may still find it helpful to refine your search using the filters which appear to the right of your search results.

After running a search, you will now see three tabs--Library Catalog, PubMed, and Galter Website. There is also an option to expand the Library Catalog results to include articles and book chapters.

Library Exhibit: Photographing Pediatrics

Photographing Pediatrics

Photographing Pediatrics presents a selection of images from a collection of over 400 clinical photographs dating from circa 1900 to 1940.* The photographs were taken for teaching and research purposes for medical staff at Northwestern University’s South Side Dispensary and Montgomery Ward Outpatient Clinics.

This exhibit is intended for a medical audience. It may be challenging for some viewers. These photographs were taken to document clinical cases, not as individualized portraits.

Some of the infectious diseases and hereditary conditions exhibited are rarely encountered by modern-day physicians, with others reappearing with increasing frequency.  For the exhibit, photographs were cropped and anonymized to protect the identity of former patients. The majority of photographs contain only brief handwritten clinical notes or annotations such as the diagnosis, date and name of the patient and/or physician. The original diagnoses have been reproduced in italics on exhibit labels – including medical terminology no longer used due to their pejorative connotations.

This exhibit also provides an overview of the history of the University’s dispensaries and outpatient clinics, which provided care to many thousands of Chicagoans for more than a century.

Photographing Pediatrics is a Northwestern Medicine collaboration between: Susan Sacharski, BA, Archivist, Northwestern Memorial Hospital; Ron Sims, MA, Special Collections Librarian, Galter Health Sciences Library, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine; Paula Summerly, PhD, Post-Doctoral Fellow, Medical Humanities and Bioethics Program, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine

The organizers would like to acknowledge and thank the following individuals and institutions for their generous assistance in making Photographing Pediatrics possible from Northwestern University: James Shedlock, AMLS, AHIP, FMLA, Director, Galter Health Sciences Library; John T. Clarke, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine, Emeritus; Stanford T. Shulman, MD, The Virginia H. Rogers Professor of Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Head, Division of Infectious Diseases; from the Medical Humanities & Bioethics Program, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine: Joel Frader, MD, MA, The A. Todd Davis Professor of General Academic Pediatrics and Professor of Medical Humanities & Bioethics; Tod Chambers, PhD, Program Director; Kathryn Montgomery, PhD, The Julia and David Uihlein Professor; Catherine Belling, PhD; and Bryan M.T. Morrison; Sandeep Jain, MD, Division of Immunotherapy and Autoimmune Diseases; Helen Facto, RBP, MA, former Biological Photographer, Wesley Memorial Hospital; Kristina Hedley, Director of Special Affairs, Northwestern Memorial Hospital; and Rusty Heckaman, MLIS, American Academy of Pediatrics.

The exhibit will run through September 2011 in Dollie's Corner, 2nd floor of the Galter Health Sciences Library (303 E. Chicago Ave, Chicago, IL 60611).

*The photographic collection is held in the Galter Health Sciences Library Special Collections, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.
