Web of Knowledge Maintenance: Sunday November 22

ISI Web of Knowledge, EndNote Web and Researcher ID will undergo maintenance this coming Sunday, November 22nd, 2009 beginning 9:00 AM ET. During this time, there will be a disruption of service and access to these products. Access to saved searches will be completely unavailable until 11:00 AM ET.

Web of Knowledge includes the databases Conference Proceedings Citation Index, Derwent Innovations Index, Journal Citation Reports, Social Sciences Citation Index, and Science Citation Index.

PubMed and Ovid MEDLINE Updates: NLM 2009 Annual Year-End-Processing

On November 18, 2009, the National Library of Medicine (NLM) began its annual year-end-processing activities that are projected to end mid-December. During this time, NLM temporarily halts the addition of fully-indexed MEDLINE citations to PubMed and the delivery of the fully indexed MEDLINE files to Ovid and other third parties. Annual year-end activities include changing the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) and Supplementary Concept Substance Names on existing MEDLINE citations to conform with the 2010 version of MeSH, and other global changes. The release of author name and other corrections into PubMed and Ovid MEDLINE are also halted during year-end-processing.

What does this mean for searchers?

PubMed: During end-of-year activities, "in process" citations will continue to be added to PubMed. As a result, the number of PubMed records labeled [PubMed - in process] will temporarily increase. These citations do not have MeSH terms, but they have undergone issue level and subsequent citation level quality control reviews.

Searches that use MeSH terms only (e.g. MeSH Database-initiated searches) rather than a combination of MESH and All Fields searches (which would be the norm if you search from the PubMed home page) do not retrieve in process or publisher-supplied records. Those MeSH-only searches may not retrieve the latest results during the update. This will also affect users who have saved searches in PubMed and set up email alerts using MeSH terms only.

Ovid MEDLINE: As the NLM updates its MEDLINE files to accommodate subject heading and other changes, Ovid and other third party MEDLINE providers must also perform global updates on their sites. Auto-alerts and currency of the Ovid MEDLINE files (those with date ranges) may be affected, but the Ovid MEDLINE In-Process file segment will continue to be updated. (The Ovid MEDLINE In-Process file segment may be accessed from the list of databases retrieved from the "Change Databases" tab on the main Ovid search screen.)

EndNote X3 Now Available!

EndNote version X3 is now available to all current faculty, staff, and students with a valid NetID. If you are off-campus, you will need to connect to NU using VPN (signing in to the Galter Library website is not sufficient). You can download EndNote from the NUIT software site. Both Windows and Mac versions are available.

Windows users: When downloading be sure to "Save File". A zipped folder will be downloaded to your computer. DO NOT double click on the zipped folder. Instead, right click and extract the contents of the folder to a convenient file folder on your computer.

The extracted folder contains several items including the ENX3 installer, a ReadMe file, and the NU toolkit folder. After installing the software you should run the update to X3. From within EndNote, choose "EndNote Program Updates" from the "Help" menu and follow the on-screen prompts. After running the update, open the ReadMe file for instructions on installing the files in the NU ToolKit.

What's New in EndNote X3?

EndNote X3 has a faster start up than previous versions of EndNote. Some nice new features have been added such as the ability to create multiple bibliographies within the same document; improved groups functionality; compatibility with OpenOffice; and the addition of more journal and manuscript styles. BenchFly for Video Protocols, Reviews and a Chuckle

It seems like video protocols are getting more popular, not to mention easier to create and share. You can find scientific how-to videos on YouTube, JoVE and SciVee. This blog has done a feature on JoVE, but submitting to JoVE is not always easy to do: submission fees are pretty steep, especially if you need them to come to your lab and produce your video for you.

If you have a technique or protocol to share and just want to get it "out there", BenchFly offers a good venue for sharing your videos, plus it includes reviews of lab supplies and a blog that is good for a laugh (or a groan).

Special Collections Exhibit: Military Medical Men of the Civil War

The current exhibit in the Eckenhoff Reference Room and in the Special Collections reception area highlights some of the American Civil War era texts and artifacts held by the Galter Health Sciences Library Special Collections. Here you can see noted texts and correspondence from both Confederate and Union medical men including Dr. Edmund Andrews, one of the medical school's founders. Nearly all of the founders served in the military, either at Camp Douglas in Chicago or on the battlefields.

Dr. Andrews acquired the most notable battlefield experience as surgeon in the First Illinois Regiment of Light Artillery, seeing heavy action during Grant’s campaign in Tennessee. Letters from Dr. Andrews were published in the Chicago Medical Examiner during 1862 and described his observations with descriptions of surgeries, conditions of the camps and hospitals, and overall health of the troops.

Publications

Mark Berendsen, Education Librarian, has been exceptionally busy. In addition to his September marriage, he co-authored a paper with faculty in the Department of Preventive Medicine. The subject of the paper is behavioral interventions to promote smoking cessation and prevent weight gain and it is published in the September 2009 issue of Addiction.

Ron Sims, Special Collections Librarian, co-authored a paper on the history of measles in Hawaii with Dr. Stanford Shulman and Deborah Shulman from the Department of Pediatrics at Feinberg School of Medicine. The article was published in the August 2009 issue of Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal. [More]

Finding Full-Text Articles

How can I get the full-text article? That's a very common question at every academic library. There are several different ways to retrieve full-text articles through Galter Library. You'll see different cues in different databases that will lead you to the full-text of an article. Here are two buttons to look for:

No matter which database you are searching, be sure to either sign in to the Galter Library website or the NU VPN if you are off campus. Here are some helpful hints for retrieving full-text articles from several different sources including PubMed, Google Scholar, the Galter Library website, and other biomedical literature databases.

Introducing the New PubMed

A few weeks ago we gave you a sneak peek at the new PubMed redesign. The switch from the old to the new search interface is now complete and when you access PubMed from the Galter Library website, you will be automatically taken to the new search page in PubMed. The design changes are largely cosmetic: you can do all the same things you did before, but some menus have changed.

There are plenty of help materials available to ease you through the transition. The following brief video tutorials from the PubMed website cover the basics (turn up your speaker volume):
