Special Collections Exhibit: Military Medical Men of the Civil War

The current exhibit in the Eckenhoff Reference Room and in the Special Collections reception area highlights some of the American Civil War era texts and artifacts held by the Galter Health Sciences Library Special Collections. Here you can see noted texts and correspondence from both Confederate and Union medical men including Dr. Edmund Andrews, one of the medical school's founders. Nearly all of the founders served in the military, either at Camp Douglas in Chicago or on the battlefields.

Dr. Andrews acquired the most notable battlefield experience as surgeon in the First Illinois Regiment of Light Artillery, seeing heavy action during Grant’s campaign in Tennessee. Letters from Dr. Andrews were published in the Chicago Medical Examiner during 1862 and described his observations with descriptions of surgeries, conditions of the camps and hospitals, and overall health of the troops.

Publications

Mark Berendsen, Education Librarian, has been exceptionally busy. In addition to his September marriage, he co-authored a paper with faculty in the Department of Preventive Medicine. The subject of the paper is behavioral interventions to promote smoking cessation and prevent weight gain and it is published in the September 2009 issue of Addiction.

Ron Sims, Special Collections Librarian, co-authored a paper on the history of measles in Hawaii with Dr. Stanford Shulman and Deborah Shulman from the Department of Pediatrics at Feinberg School of Medicine. The article was published in the August 2009 issue of Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal. [More]

Finding Full-Text Articles

How can I get the full-text article? That's a very common question at every academic library. There are several different ways to retrieve full-text articles through Galter Library. You'll see different cues in different databases that will lead you to the full-text of an article. Here are two buttons to look for:

No matter which database you are searching, be sure to either sign in to the Galter Library website or the NU VPN if you are off campus. Here are some helpful hints for retrieving full-text articles from several different sources including PubMed, Google Scholar, the Galter Library website, and other biomedical literature databases.

PubMed Redesign Now Available for Preview

The PubMed search interface is about to undergo its largest design change in years and a preview is now available. Search functionality appears to be the same while most of the changes relate to the results display. Galter librarians are still in the process of exploring the new interface and will be updating our online guides very soon. The Galter Library's PubMed class on October 15 will feature the new design.

You can access a preview of the redesign from the PubMed homepage or at http://preview.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?holding=norwelib&otool=norwelib. The preview and original version will run side by side for approximately two weeks after which time the preview will be the only option available. For a detailed list of the various changes, see the September 30 issue of NLM Technical Bulletin.

The Feinberg School Celebrates 150 Years: the New Chicago Campus, 1926-1955

This is the third installment in a multi-part series on the history of Northwestern University's medical school.

Planning a New Campus

Northwestern University's professional schools—Medical, Law, Commerce, Dental, and Pharmacy*—were originally founded as separate schools and scattered in various locations throughout the city of Chicago. In 1902, with the exception of the Medical School, the schools were consolidated in a single Loop location in the Northwestern University Building (formerly the Tremont House) at Dearborn and Lake Streets. In 1915, the University began looking for land to construct a new campus that could accommodate all the schools in their own specialized buildings in one central location.

Heidi Nickisch Duggan Chosen as Leadership Fellow

Heidi Nickisch Duggan, Associate Director, Galter Health Sciences Library, has been named one of five Leadership Fellows by the National Library of Medicine and the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries. The NLM/AAHSL Leadership Fellows Program has been in existence since 2002 and seeks to develop aspiring directors for academic health sciences libraries. Of the 35 fellows who have entered the program, 13 have gone on to achieve library directorships. We are honored that Heidi has been chosen to be a leadership fellow.

Return of the Mayo Brothers' Portrait to Galter Library

The portrait of William James Mayo (ScD 1929) and Charles Horace Mayo (MD 1888, MA 1904, LLD 1921) has been returned from the restoration and conservation studio, Parma Conservation. Located on the near South Side of Chicago, Parma specializes in oversize art works, such as murals and frescoes. The Mayo Brothers’ portrait is 86” x 70” and certainly qualifies as oversize.

The conservation process included cleaning, patching and in-painting, flattening the canvas, re-backing and mounting a new, reinforced stretcher.

The artist, Gerald Cassidy, was born in Covington, Kentucky in 1879, and grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio. He studied at the Mechanic Institute in Cincinnati and with Frank Duveneck at the Cincinnati Art Academy and in New York at the National Academy of Design and Art Students League. He was also employed as an art director for a lithography firm while in New York City.

At age 20 he was diagnosed with tuberculosis and traveled to a sanitarium in New Mexico. This move introduced him to life in the American Southwest. He earned his living by painting portraits of Native Americans and scenes of the Southwest that were intended to be reproduced on postcards. He moved to Denver when his health improved, establishing his reputation as a lithographer for magazine illustrations, murals, and advertisements.

The Galter Health Sciences Library has a number of computer peripherals and media equipment available for you to check out at the Circulation Desk. For instance, did you know that you can check out a digital camera? That's just one of the many items available for use within and outside of the library.

Bringing your laptop to the library? Maybe one of these items will come in handy.

Use one of the library’s extension cords to plug your laptops into those hard to reach electrical outlets.
If a couple of people want to share the same electrical outlet, borrow one of our power strips so you can share the electricity with your neighbors.
Use an ethernet cable to connect your laptop to the Internet. The library has network outlets in almost every area of the library.
When you need more than a trackpad to move the cursor on your screen borrow a mouse.
Secure your laptop to a table or study carrel using a laptop lock.
If you forgot your laptop borrow one!
